Make the Focus the Focus

Have you ever looked at a photo you liked, but felt that the subject was being a little overshadowed by the background? Making the focus of a picture stand out, can be done quite simply in a few quick steps with one of Photoshop's Blur effects.

No one wants a fuzzy photograph. However, there are times when blurring the background can serve a purpose. For example, in photo #859887 from iPHOTOS.com, the winter forest behind the beautiful golden retriever is already a little out of focus. Not enough though that you don't see the picture as a whole, rather than find your eye drawn to the dog.

We wondered what would happen if we took the blur a little further.

After opening the image in Photoshop and changing the size and resolution to what we wanted, we 'selected; the area to change. There are many techniques for this, but given the simplicity of the photo, we decided on a quick and easy method.

The first step was to choose the Quick Selection Tool. By holding the left mouse button and moving the cursor to drag the dotted line we were able to select the area we wanted blurred.

Once the selection was made we chose 'Filter' > 'Blur' > 'Gaussian Blur', then changed the pixels to get the desired amount of blur. We chose 5 for this image.

Once done, the only thing left was to deselect (Command+D) which removes the dotted line, then save it as a JPG.

In comparing the original with the Photoshopped result, we agreed that the change is subtle but does seem to put a little more of the attention on the gorgeous dog.
